Creating art from wire

Creating art from pedestrian and often overlooked materials seems to be a skill belonging to so many artisans throughout Africa, and for the team at Professional Wireworks, wire is their material of choice.

This remarkably detailed and beautifully hand-crafted 'knit wire' Kudu Head is handmade by Professor Pedro and his team of guys at Professional Wireworks in the Dunoon suburb of Cape Town. 

While wire art is a common art form in South Africa, the knit wire technique was designed by Pedro and is unique to him.

The process of making art by twisting wire is quite difficult and requires strong hands, which is perhaps one of the reasons why wire art artisans are often men

  • Material:  Galvanized Steel Wire either raw or powder coated

  • Origin:  South Africa

  • Pieces are not recommended for outdoor use or use in excessively damp or moist environments, as any exposed wire will rust, unless of course rusted wire is a patina you are happy with.
